Elvis Is No King To Charles PDF Print E-mail
Written by Joanne Leyland
Thursday, 16 August 2007

Today, thousands across America and around the globe are marking the day on which, 30 years ago, Elvis Presley finally left the building.

But whilst he may continue to reign supreme in the hearts of millions of fans, as one young singer discovered to his amusement, Elvis never really made much of an impression on a man who truly will be 'The King': Prince Charles.

The Day Andrew Met Claude PDF Print E-mail
Written by Joanne Leyland
Tuesday, 14 August 2007

This month, the world's most famous lady is enjoying something the rest of us take for granted: peace and quiet. For a few weeks at least during her annual holiday at Balmoral, the Queen is primarily a country woman, savouring the land she loves and the privacy so many in public life crave.

But as Prince Andrew discovered, one has to go a very long way to enjoy true anonymity.....

Written by Joanne Leyland
Thursday, 10 May 2007

Within just a few weeks, Tony Blair will say a formal farwell to the Queen at Buckingham Palace following his resignation from office.

But whilst he may feel a pang of regret following his last official visit to the Palace as the Prime Minister, one of his most famous colleagues will likely feel no such emotion due to his own memories of the day the Queen "fooled" him before the eyes of the world.....

The Day Charles Studied Dummies For Royalty PDF Print E-mail
Written by Joanne Leyland
Monday, 26 March 2007

This week's story about the private car following the train carrying Prince Charles for an engagement on climate change is a reminder of the lengths to which officials have to go to make sure everything is just right for the wheels of monarchy to continue to roll.

However, this story is nothing when stood alongside that concerning a visit Charles made to Cambridge during which the startled Prince was in quite a shock.......

If you thought your last journey was a traumatic experience, probably thanks to the usual delays we've come to expect on the roads or airlines, spare a thought for a lady who embarked on a trip to New Zealand, only to fall sick with heart problems and wake up to find herself sleeping close to Prince Andrew!

The news that Sarah, Duchess of York has given an emotionally charged interview to her longtime friend Pamela Stephenson is a reminder of the close relationship between royalty and celebrity.

Comedian Billy Connolly's psychologist wife has previously made the headlines for her royal friendship, thanks to the remarkable story of how she joined Fergie and Diana for a night on the town during which H.R.H. The Princess of Wales was mistaken for a stripper!

The Moment Philip Heard More Than He Should PDF Print E-mail
Written by Joanne Leyland
Monday, 20 November 2006

As Prince Philip would concede, over the years he's made more than a few gaffes of his own. He's also been called a few names, but not usually to his face.

That was until he visited an institute for the blind during which he unexpectedly heard what one of the residents truly thought about the impending royal visit....

Who's A Pretty Princess? PDF Print E-mail
Written by Joanne Leyland
Wednesday, 11 October 2006

The Princess Royal must have thought she'd found a new, particularly keen admirer when, during a formal visit to a school, a loud wolf whistle pervaded the air as the royal guest arrived.

But sadly for Anne, it wasn't quite all that it seemed......

The Prince, the Princess and her un-noble lover PDF Print E-mail
Written by Joanne Leyland
Thursday, 08 December 2005
In the mid-1990s, several years before she finally married Prince Edward — but also several years into their relationship — an editor at The Sun newspaper apparently lost their concept of what constituted a good story. The paper ran a huge front page photograph showing Sophie leaving Buckingham Palace in the early morning. The-then Miss Rhys-Jones was pictured in her modest car, driving through the arches of the Palace at around 7 or 8am, a soldier wearing his famous red tunic and busby looking on. The implication was obvious: the unmarried Edward and Sophie were possibly sleeping together under the very roof of the Head of the Church of England.

Of course, nobody apart from those looking down from an unattainable moral highground gave a hoot as to the private nature of Edward and Sophie’s relationship. But Sophie should be very thankful her romantic life wasn't exposed in quite the same way as an earlier royal lady.

Well at least Philip didn't swear! PDF Print E-mail
Written by Joanne Leyland
Friday, 04 November 2005
As even they would perhaps acknowledge, the Queen and Prince Philip are not the most tactile people in public. Indeed, the majority of people would be utterly disbelieving if they were told that Philip even HAS a gentle and tactile side to his character. After all, isn’t the Duke of Edinburgh supposed to be the epitomy of  the 'Grumpy Old Men’ depicted by Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon in the movie of the same name? On one very rare occasion some years ago, though, the Queen and her husband publicly showed an intimate side to their relationship….with hilarious results!

Today (Monday) the Public Records Office (PRO) in Kew, near London, are releasing a new collection of previously "secret" papers, one small section of which relates to a small story concerning the Queen. Considering it's taken forty six years for the papers to be declassified, it would be understandable if you expect this to be a story of the upmost importance?

The story of the Queen, the VIP and the horse PDF Print E-mail
Written by Joanne Leyland
Sunday, 30 October 2005
It's well known that the Queen prefers the company of horses to the company of people. But even they are not always to be relied upon, as a very embarrased Queen discovered during a State Visit on which everyone - man and beast alike - should have been on their very best behaviour.

The author who probably wished he never met Queen Mary PDF Print E-mail
Written by Joanne Leyland
Sunday, 30 October 2005
The majority of British Royals are hardly the most literary bunch of people you could hope to meet. Serious historian Princess Michael of Kent aside, the Windsor clan prefer to spend their days 'hunting, shooting and fishing' rather than spending quality time with their noses in a book.

In 1935 King George V attempted to impress a top author with his admittedly limited knowledge of books. But then the Queen stepped in and, not for the first or last time, a wife managed to embarrass her husband...

Diana, Princess of Wales famously enjoyed a hands-on approach with the public, but it wasn't always such a wise move. Oh for the days when expensive gloves were mandatory for every royal lady!
