BOOK REVIEW: A Dress For Diana by David & Elizabeth Emmanuel PDF Print E-mail

This August saw the release of a book that I, and many others, have been eagerly awaiting for many, many years: the full story behind a wedding dress which captured the imagination of the world.

A Dress For Diana by designers David Emanuel and Elizabeth Emanuel is a book of sheer joy and delight for people like myself who have not only followed Diana for most of our lives but have been enchanted by that dress. This book has been long in production and when it finally arrived in book shops it did not disappoint.

Unlike the official Diana tribute book which many people have agreed with me is uncomfortable and too cumbersome to hold, A Dress For Diana is a pefect size. Running to 208 pages, it's crammed full of wonderful photographs and information, much of which I've never seen before.

The book begins with an overview of the life of the Emanuels, offering the reader an insight into their work and they designs they've produced for other famous ladies, such as Rolling Stones star Mick Jagger's ex-wife Bianca.

The introduction also includes a wonderful picture of a famous photograph of Lady Diana which appeared in Vogue magazine at the time of her wedding.

Primarily aware only of Diana's wedding dress, I admit I enjoyed looking at the designs worn by other brides who were dressed by the Emanuels. Not having been born then, it's fascinating to see the fashion trends of the late 1970s and early 80s.

Naturally, though, the book is predominantly about Diana and of course, that famous black dress was mentioned. We see some superb photographs of Lady Diana making her debut in an Emanuel design for her very first official public engagement with Prince Charles at the Goldsmith Hall in March 1981.

It's hard to believe now but, at the time footage of this event, during which Diana appeared to be almost falling out of her dress (one which was daring for this time - before Diana, royal ladies never wore black unless in mourning), there were high level discussions in newsrooms in London as to whether the evening bulletin should broadcast the image of the future Princess's bosom being 'revealed' to the world.
