Harry & Kate Receive A Mauling From The Press PDF Print E-mail
Written by Joanne Leyland
Saturday, 26 August 2006

It's amazing how a photo doesn't always tell the whole story. Take today's tabloids here in the UK. Readers have been treated to a selection of images showing Princes William and Harry, along with Kate Middleton, leaving the Cuckoo Club in London in the early hours of Friday morning.

The majority of today's papers report on Harry as being 'worse for wear', one headline publishing the headline: 'Prince of ales'.

But if you saw the pictures we posted here yesterday, Harry looked fresh and no worse for wear than William! Yet that hasn't stopped another round of 'bad Harry' portrayals.

Speaking about the Princes appearance after their night out, an onlooker tells the Daily Mirror: "They were both a bit hammered - especially Harry. He had to be led along by his jumper and his purple boxer shorts could be seen popping over the top of his trousers. The pair of them looked like they really enjoyed the evening but it had certainly caught up with them."

In contrast, Kate Middleton looked fresh and alert. But even she hasn't escaped receiving something of a mauling, this time in a report in last night's London Evening Standard.

Writer Bella Blissett questioned how on earth Kate continues to exude such a perfect image, recalling: "I saw her a few weeks ago having a grown-up supper with some almost equally pristine chums at Conran's Bluebird Restaurant. Barely a wrist or ankle on show — potential royals don't bleach their hair, drink vodka or wear thigh-skimming leopard print (see Chelsy Davy) — she exuded the same aura of perfection."

The journalist later notes how she'd much prefer a night out with Kate Moss (recently involved a drugs scandal) than the "ever-restrained Miss Middleton."

The royal party had started the long night with dinner. Depending on reports this was either at the Automat restaurant or the Wolsley restaurant. Following the meal with friends, the royal trio moved on to the Cuckoo Club in London's West End where other guests numbered Friends star David Schwimmer.

William, Harry and Kate stayed here from midnight until 3am, at which point they began to emerge out of the doors of the exclusive Mayfair venue, annual membership to which costs £350, having enjoyed a night which saw them down a large number of cocktails. Just one cocktail costs a staggering £13!

According to reports, while William was relaxed about the attention they attracted on departure, Harry looked irritated by the cameras (seeing the coverage he's received today, that's perfectly understandable).

As usual, William and Kate left separately, 24-year-old Miss Middleton leaving the venue to minutes after the royal brothers in a black Audi car driven by one of William's bodyguards.

It should be noted that whilst most of today's papers have led with an image of Harry looking the worse for wear, his eyes almost shut (could it be he was simply protecting his eyes from the flashing cameras?!) other far more innocent images were available — one of which was shown here yesterday — of Harry looking just as bright eyed as Kate.

Poor Harry.....as with Princess Margaret before him, he seems destined to be the black sheep of the family, even when he's done no wrong.

Agreed Henri, but my point was that William has also provided these opportunities regularly, but has been spared the Press attention . Either his pics have been held back (such as on the occasion of the fancy-dress party which Harry attended dressed as a Nazi, when the paper actually had those embarrassing pics of William and decided not to run them) or the emphasis is put on Kate instead (who the papers REALLY want him to marry) He looked equally out of it on several occasions but his appearance was not even commented on, it was bad Harry as usual.

I find all three of them (William, Harry and Kate) to be a bit of a disappointment, particularly as they are not teenagers any more. More was expected of the Royals of the previous generation ... for example, our rather silly press seems to applaud Kate as a perfect example of a Royal-to-be for merely NOT being drunk. What an accomplishment! Compare and contrast Zara Phillips, who despite a "wild child" image manages to dedicate herself to a challenging career requiring much discipline and hard work. Many say they are only doing the same things that other young people like to do these days (clubbing, heavy drinking and so forth) but that is exactly my point: they AREN'T other young people. If they get too "common", than why on Earth should we respect them for being any more than spoiled, rich kids? That to whom much is given, much is expected.

Okay, so let's all loathe Kate because of what the press writes....

I prefer not to pay attention to the silliness of the press. The more pressing problems are the drinking habits of these two young men, than whether or not the press writes about Kate being perfect.

I would like to comment on M-M: we must not forget that it is Prince Harry himself who is graciously providing the ammunition for his own problems with the media.

I just don't get or understand how the media puts Kate on such a saintly pedestal and constantly praising her "regal" "perfect" persona, while at the same time throwing the ACTUAL royal princes' to the dirt.thumbsdown blue-smiley She was there just as long as the princes were, unless she showed up just for the photo opportunity, and as far as anyone knows she was probably drinking also. It's just such blantant double standards by the press...it's disgusting!!! thumbsdown

It's just more of the same. Harry was thrown to the wolves of the tabloid Press at a very young age, probably by Mark Bolland and the other spinners at St James's Palace in those days.

The PCC seems to have turned a blind eye in his case because no protection was afforded him, and when his youth ensured that there was nothing else to accuse him of, they started on his intellect and school results.

You would have thought he was an axe-murderer, his press could have been no worse.

William, just as inclined to go clubbing, and also fond of the booze, has been protected (probably in exchange for a free run on Harry). And each time the newspaper archives are ransacked and all the old bad press revived.

Poor Harry, he's had a lot more than his mother's early death to bear.

I feel pity for them. In other monarchies (Spain, Sweden, Netherlands, etc.) the media at least has a positive attitude as a basic norm.

It looks like (parts) of UK media are not even attempting to keep an open, unprejudiced and fair eye on the royals. Sad.

And oh yes... there áre royal ladies painting or bleaching their hair.

I can't believe people really believe or are interested in this stuff about these young people. You can make anyone look horrid through photos. You just have to take enough photos and choose the one that proves your point.
