What Cabin Crews REALLY Think of The Royals PDF Print E-mail
Written by Joanne Leyland
Tuesday, 03 October 2006

It's rare (if at all) that any of us have the opportunity to come face-to-face with the royals and so it's always fascinating to hear the honest views of those who do.

I thought it would therefore be fun to point you all to a website on which flight staff from airlines throughout the world are giving their 100% honest views (purely personal views of course of their perhaps all-too-brief encounters) of famous celebrities, including royals.

The late Princess of Wales — surely one of the most famous people anyone could fly with — is surprisingly mentioned only a couple of times, apparently eliciting very different reactions, with one worker referring to Diana as having had a "wicked sense of humour".

Not mentioned on the website is the breathless comment the Princess made on arriving for a private flight during the last weeks of her life, telling the crew: "I've just managed to get the washing done in time."

Unfortunately, though, a second crew member appears to have less fond memories of the Prince of Wales' first wife, saying: "Let's just say I won't speak ill of the dead."

A regular star of the boards is Prince Andrew, known to the media as 'Air Miles Andy' thanks to his numerous jaunts across the country for golf tournaments and worldwide in his role as an ambassador for British trade.

The consensus seems to be that the Queen's second son is a little tricky, one crew member offering the opinion (later backed up by another): "Prince Andrew...blows hot and cold. One minute can appear nice enough, the next, treats you like a moron."

However, the Prince is portrayed in a more positive light with a fun story told by 'WWF', who writes as follows:

"I was working on a 747 once as the economy purser JFK-LHR. I walked up to the front while the aircraft was still on stand to get the paperword from the chief."

"I noticed this cute guy standing talking to a couple of the crew and recognised him. I walked right up to him and said 'oh hi, how are you?' He was very polite back to me and made small talk."

"I walked away assuming he was positioing crew maybe cabin crew maybe flight crew. Wasn't sure but I knew that I had seen and maybe flown with this guy before."

"It was later during the flight that the first class purser came down and told me that her VIP passengers were really nice."

"'Oh yes', I replied. 'Who have you got up there', I enquired?"

"Oh it's Prince Andrew!!!"

"I had not recognised Prince Andrew!!! Thank god I didn't make any rude or suggestive comments to him. I'd be locked up in the tower of London!!!!"

Another writes that Fergie (who I admit I'm only assuming to be the Duchess of York — famed for her generoisty — rather than the Black Eyed Peas singer) is a joy, poster SeanJFK saying: "What a luv!".

The European royals appear to keep up appearances rather better than their British counterparts, poster Tamme writing of seeing whom we should perhaps assume to be Mary (she being the more famous of the Danish Princesses): "Her Royal Highness The Princess of Denmark with some of her staff going from Frankfurt to Copenhagen. Very nice and distinguished, stylish lady!"

Other European royals mentioned include Princess Stephanie of Monaco — "pleasant" — and King Juan Carlos of Spain's unnamed daughter (Christina?) who is said to be "sweet, beautiful and minimal security".

Generally, though, it would appear the Windsors don't appear to fare too well in the eyes of airline staff, the most damning indictment coming with this comment from a poster going by the name 'drinktrolley': "Had a few royals from Spain, Monaco, Denmark, Sweden and of course the worst...British (no offence to fellow colleagues...)."

All in all then we can assume there are some on the airlines who were more depressed than most by the decommissioning of the Royal Yacht Britannia in 1997?!

I read the forum on airlinecrew.net and the comment "her royal highness, the princess of denmark with some of her staff going from frankfurt to copenhagen. very nice and distinguished, stylish lady!" was wriiten on Oct 4, 2001. Therefore, the flight attendant was not refering to CrownPrincess Mary (who became a princes sin 2004), but probably to Princess Alexandra.
