Just months after her wedding to the Prince of Wales one of Princess Diana's first solo engagements was helping to light up London by turning on the Regent Street Christmas illuminations. Twenty four years later it was down to the Prince of Wales' second wife to bring a bit of cheer to the dark streets of the capital. In her capacity as President of the National Osteoporosis Society, the former Camilla Parker Bowles last night turned on the Christmas lights in Burlington shopping arcade in London's Piccadilly. Crowds turned out in force to give Camilla a warm reception on what was a cold Autumn night. Ironically enough the new Duchess appeared in a deep, bottle green, velvet outfit...ironic because when Diana turned on some Christmas lights in London in 1981 she too wore a velvet outfit (hers was deep blue).a cold Autumn night all those years ago she too opted for a velvet outfit. But we really shouldn't do this, should we - keep comparing Camilla to Diana?! Camilla,
always a somewhat nervy lady, was relaxed as she undertook a rare solo
appearance without Charles by her side. Wearing a deep bottle green,
velvet all-in-one outfit the Duchess chatted and mingled happily with
the public. Her ten thousand pounds appearance fee - annually offered
by the local retailers to everyone, celebrity or royal, who switches on
the lights - was given at the Duchess's bequest to the charity with
which she has so much empathy due to the fact her own mother died from
the debilitating bone disease.Camilla's next appearance will be on Friday when she and Charles visit the North West of England, including a visit to Liverpool Football Club (LFC) at Anfield. It's highly questionable whether Charles will even realise the significance of where he is as he's certainly no football fan, having (as we've previously noted) once started to hand a major Cup Final trophy to the losing team....in front of an audience of thousands of ardent soccer fans in the stadium and millions more around the world!
