Although the Royal Palace initially condemned the allegation as "ridiculous", royal officials added to the confusion surrounding the story by appearing to move away from their original statment and refusing to even confirm or deny whether the King, a keen huntsman, had gone shooting during his stay in Russia.

Now, according to Vologda's provincial Governor, Vyacheslav Pozgalyov: "All rumors and speculation about Spanish King Juan Carlos' alleged hunting in the Vologda Region are ungrounded and untrue. I confirm that the King of Spain Juan Carlos I visited our region, but the rest is a concoction. There was no hunting whatsoever."
