Charles & Camilla Arrive In Pakistan PDF Print E-mail
Written by Joanne Leyland

The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall have arrived in Pakistan for an official tour widely seen as the most perilous of recent years.

With the tour set to receive worldwide coverage, Charles and Camilla — wearing a blue trouser suit — were greeted at Chaklala military airbase by banks of cameras and media representatives, as well as huge security.

Leading the official welcome was the British High Commissioner Sir Mark Lyall Grant and women's minister Sumaira Malik.

Although Pakistan has played host to previous royal tours — including visits by Diana (her last in May 1997) and the Queen and Prince Philip in October 1997 — this week's is deemed especially dangerous, due in part to the number of failed assassination attempts on President General Musharraf and the widespread terrorist bombings which continue to occur throughout the country.

As well as the threat from both Al Qaeda and the Taliban, the Pakistani government is also faced with growing opposition to the President's military government and rivalry between Sunni and Shia communities.

Added to these threats to security are the ongoing difficulties over the disputed Kashmir region, all of which make Pakistan one of the most politically and diplomatically sensitive countries in the world, especially for high profile foreign dignitaries such as Charles and Camilla.

Even before the couple stepped foot in Islamabad tonight, there's been one possible security breach surrounding the visit.

A Pakistani newspaper published what it claimed to be exclusive details of the royal itinerary. Clarence House officials refused to confirm or deny whether it is indeed the genuine schedule for the five-day tour.

Having arrived late on Sunday, the royal tour will truly begin on Monday with a meeting between Charles and President Musharraf, during which it's believed the Prince will raise Britain's concerns over the planned execution of a Leeds-born citizen.

As previously reported, Prince Charles' intervention has already led to the execution of a 36-year-old Briton on death row being put back until December 31st, his hanging having originally been scheduled to take place during the royal tour.

While her husband meets the President, Camilla will meet separately with the General's wife, Begum Sehba Musharraf.

If the condemned man has a reasonable case , and it seems so , then it will look very bad indeed for the POW (bad PR) if he is unable to obtain a pardon , or a death sentence commuted to a prison sentence for him - rather than just cynically putting off the execution until he himself is safely back in the UK !

He is now personally associated with the outcome , whether he likes it or not .

Either he has done some good for a British citizen in prison in Pakistan , or he has only strung out the agony of death row in order to avoid his own embarrassment while on tour . sad-smiley

I went back and read the article again that explained why he was in jail. According to it he had said the the taxi driver was armed and trying to sexually assault him and he killed him in self defence. It also said that the regular court had acquited him. That's what I based my opinion on. If there's more to it than that or he was lying, then, of course, that would make a big difference. You may have had a lot moe coverage in the UK than we did and may know more facts that we don't.

Well, it was my understanding that the gun went off in a struggle and that he was exonerated by the court and that it was the religious court that came back and sentenced him to death. If this isn't correct and he did kill someone in cold blood, then I agree, he should get life in prison.

Muriel:
Why should a man who killed a taxi driver in cold blood, without regard to the victim's family go free? At the very least he should rot in prison for the heinous crime.

Well, I certainly hope they have a successful tour and nothing untowards happens. This is a very important tour, but a risky one at best. I do hope that HRH is able to get the planned execution totally stopped and the man can go free.
