Royal Marriages of More Than Convenience PDF Print E-mail

As the only child of the aforementioned Prince Christopher, who died barely a year after his son was born, the writer Prince Michael no doubt inherited from his father — as well as the estate of his mother, HRH Princess Francoise d'Orleans of France — his father's second wife.

His alliance with Marina Karella resulted in two daughters, connections with her artistic world, and a very comfortable existence. Much gained from giving up his dynastic rights for marrying a commoner.

4) Royal and Wealthy:

Royal and Wealthy – this is the royal equivalent of having your cake and eating it too. Breeding and money...

a) Princess Marie Bonaparte, wife of Olga’s second son, Prince George of Greece: Sigh.....Portraying Her Majesty in the film, The Queen, is Helen Mirren. What irony that the much more obscure Princesse Marie Bonaparte, is played by the elegant Catherine Deneuve in the French film, Princesse Marie. Wealthy through her mother, who had been heiress to a Monte Carlo real estate fortune, and having status through the imperial Bonaparte family, Princess Marie was the noted psychoanalyst instrumental in getting Sigmund Freud out of Nazi-occupied Austria. She along with Princess Anastasia kept the Greek royals living in some comfort while in exile in Paris.

b) Princess Francoise d'Orleans of the French royals, 2nd wife of Prince Christopher, mother of Prince Michael, whose family raised the teenage orphan in the royal manner. In the 1950s, the Count and Countess of Paris lived in high style in Paris, during which time they also took in Princess Alexandra of Kent for a stint.

c) Princess Sophie of Prussia, Queen to Constantine 1st: She was the daughter of Queen Victoria's Princess Royal, known as the Empress Frederik, whose German connections proved unfavourable during wartime
.

d) Princess Frederika of Hanover, Queen to King Pavlos 1st (aunt to Prince Ernst, husband of Princess Caroline of Monaco): Labelled an emotionally-impetuous and action-oriented, if politically naïve, German princess and Cumberland descendant of George III and Queen Charlotte, Frederika was seen as putting her hand into the cauldron of Greek politics. In exile, she had her younger daughter, Princess Irene, serve almost as a latter-day Princess Victoria (sister of King George V).

e) Princess Anne-Marie of Denmark, youngest of the three daughters of Frederick and Ingrid of Denmark became Europe’s youngest queen at 18 years of age in a love match with her third cousin, Constantine II. Following the military coup, the young monarchs stayed for a time in Denmark and Rome before settling in Hampstead Heath. Until their status in Greece is regularized, they travel under Danish passports.

f) Princess Elizabeth, now Queen Elizabeth II, wife of Prince Phillip of Greece: The only son of Princess Alice of Battenberg and Prince Andreas (the fourth son of King George I and Queen Olga), the Duke of Edinburgh's family ties have ensured that his Greek relatives have continued to take part in the social life of the British court. Indeed, Constantine II is Prince William's godfather.

As much as the Greeks gained, the Greeks royals gave. Numbering among the monarchs with stately and well-bred Greek consorts are King Carol of Romania, King Juan Carlos of Spain, and Queen Elizabeth II.

(Perhaps if Prince William and Kate Middleton were to split up, drama graduate Princess Theodora would be back in the running as a possible future bride for the future King?).

What about the last two bachelor Greek princes, Nicholas and Philip?

37-year-old Nicholas was once an item with Elle McPherson and has been dating Tatiana Blatnik for at least three years. Unlike Chelsy Davy and Kate Middleton, Tatiana has remained relatively far from the public eye.

Meanwhile, young Prince Philip is only 20. Imagine if he and Princess Beatrice of York took a shine to each other — that would be the third generation of Greek royals to marry into the House of Windsor!

Some errors!
George I of Greece didn't marry Olga as it was thought a Russian princess would easily adopt the Greek Orthodox religion! It was a political decision he needed to make a marriage with a Russian princess,in those days marriages between royals were political alliances, he travelled to Russia and chose Olga out of the princess he met.
Miller money and dowry is nothing more than tabloid stories, I'm surprised it's still doing the rounds and there's never been any evidence of either. Marie-Chantal ( and her sisters) got access to their considerable trust funds when they married.
Finally the most glaring error, Irene was not a 'princess Victoria' to her mother. Frederika originally tried to get her married to CP Harald of Norway but he had already met and fallen in love with Sonja. Irene did have a long term partner, he was a married man and went into exile with the Greek royals. He's since died. Obviously being a married man he wasn't going to be seen publically with Irene at royal events!

The comment about Princess Theodora being , in other circumstances , a possible good choice of bride for William is an idea that has already occured to many Royal watchers . The match would have great advantages , in that the bride would have impeccable background and connections . At the moment it doesn't look likely though .
