As the Duke of Edinburgh would concede, over the years he's made more than a few gaffes of his own. He's also been called a few names, but not usually to his face.
That was until he visited an institute for the blind during which he unexpectedly heard what one of the residents truly thought about the impending royal visit....
According to a newly revealed story, some years ago the Prince who's famed for putting his foot in it was himself on the receiving end of a humorous 'gaffe'.
Philip, who served with the Royal Navy during the latter stages of World War Two, was making an official visit to the Royal National Institution for the War Blinded at Linburn in West Lothian, Scotland.
Unbeknownst to one blind old soldier who was lining up to meet the royal visitor, Philip had already arrived. In fact, he was standing right behind him.
And so, instead of being greeted by such standard pleasantries as 'pleased to meet you', Philip instead heard the old man exclaim: "When's this bugger supposed to be coming then?!"
Suffice to say the Duke found the whole thing highly amusing, enjoying a good laugh with the former serviceman.
