Holland's Princess Alexia Is Christened PDF Print E-mail
Written by Joanne Leyland

There've been some wonderful royal images flying in from throughout Europe this weekend, so much so we can barely keep up (though rest assured we'll try!). First we had the emotional scenes from the French Riviera of the Grimaldis at the coronation of Prince Albert.

Now, later on Saturday, we receive some lovely, happy family photos from the christening of Princess Alexia, the second child of the future King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of The Netherlands.
Queen Beatrix looked especially cheerful as she watched her latest granddaughter baptised in the church near Willem and Maxima's home, Villa Eikenhorst, on the De Horsten Estate at Dorpskerk in Wassenaar.

Maxima and Willem-Alexander, holding their first child Princess Catharina-Amalia in his arms, watched proudly as their baby girl quietly allowed the clergyman to trickle the holy water over her head

Thank goodness the Princess didn't emulate the decibel noise levels of another royal baby, this time one from the House of Windsor.
The noisiest child I personally have ever heard at a christening - albeit I sadly (and obviously!) wasn't in the congregation at this particular event! - was Princess Eugenie of York, daughter of Prince Andrew, Duke of York and Sarah, Duchess of York ('Fergie').

When the granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth II was christened at Sandringham's St. Mary Magdalen Church in December 1990, the crowds and media outside listening outside were faced with an onslaught of terrible wailing from inside the church!

There was no such embarrassment for today's royal parents. Following the christening the whole family posed outside for the media, little Princess Princess Catharina-Amalia looking especially happy and pretty as she once again nestled in the arms of Dad.

The only news report which I saw in England - a source for this story - claimed Maxima's parents, including her controversial father who was a civilian member of Argentina's military dictatorship, weren't at the service, a state of affairs which has occured on other important occasions. However, our keen eyed reader Lauren (thank you Lauren!) says the
Zorreguietas did, indeed, attend the christening.

One thing IS certain, though: Maxima's parents can be very proud of the way their daughter has grown into her royal role as, unlike so many women who have married into royalty, 'HRH The Princess of The Netherlands' is a real credit to the monarchy and is clearly revelling in marriage and motherhood.

Long may it continue!

Maxima's parents were there. They are clearly visible in the photos and were sitting next to Queen Beatrix in the church.
