Now Ten Police Officers Guard Kate Middleton PDF Print E-mail

However, looking back into the archives of The Times newspaper tonight, I noted that no reference was made about Diana being given police protection until the day of her engagement.

Considering recent events, however — not least the death of Diana as she was chased through Paris by the paparazzi — it's perhaps only sensible that Kate Middleton (who now appears a constant in William's life) is offered police protection in an age of all kinds of previously unseen security threats to high profile figures.

By the time Buckingham Palace announced the engagement of the Prince of Wales to Lady Diana Spencer in February 1981, the 19-year-old future Princess had suffered months of harrassment at the hands of the media (although it should be noted that this 'harassment' was far friendlier than it is today between photographers and 'public' figures).

In reality, the pressure on Diana — who was dating the immediate heir to the throne — was far greater than that on Kate.

Although she's been a focus of press attention for some time, she is now only just beginning to be truly 'stalked' by photographers who've been seconded to follow her every move by photo agencies who feel an engagement really is 'imminent'.

Clarence House and the Metropolitan Police are refusing to comment about the increased security which now surrounds Kate.

However, a security source tells the Daily Mail: "As far as we are concerned, it's not a question of if they will be engaged, but rather when. Officers are working on the basis that there'll be an imminent announcement."
