Statement: Engagement of Prince Andrew to Sarah Ferguson (1986) PDF Print E-mail

Following months of speculation, it was officially revealed in a statement released to journalists just after 10am on 19th February 1986 — Prince Andrew's 26th birthday — that the Queen's second son was to marry his girlfriend of several months, Sarah Ferguson.

The full Buckingham Palace statement read as follows:

"It is with the greatest pleasure that The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh announce the betrothal of their beloved son The Prince Andrew to Miss Sarah Ferguson, daughter of Major Ronald Ferguson and Mrs Hector Barrantes."

The couple married on July 23rd 1986. Sadly, less than six years later, the couple announced in April 1992 that they were to separate. They duly divorced in 1996.
