Having been seen for the last time at the funeral of her daughter, Princess Margaret, in February, Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother died at her Windsor home at the age of 101 on the afternoon of Saturday 30th March 2002.

The following statement was released by Buckingham Palace:

"The Queen, with the greatest sadness, has asked for the following announcement to be made immediately."

"Her beloved mother, Queen Elizabeth, died peacefully in her sleep this afternoon, at Royal Lodge, Windsor."
