The run of positive headlines enjoyed by Sarah,
Duchess of York appears to have dramatically ended.
Less than a month since she was hailed as the Mother of The Year at a ceremony in New
York, a Sunday newspaper has published a front page image of what it
claims shows Prince Andrew's ex-wife and their eldest daughter,
Princess Beatrice, posing with a man who is smoking a cannabis joint.
Under the headline 'Fergie, Bea And A Man With A Spliff', the newspaper byline reports: "Cannabis, magic mushrooms and hash cakes on holiday that will appall the Queen."
The story stems from an interview the Mail has secured with Princess Beatrice's controversial ex-boyfriend, Paolo Liuzzo.
The two first met in July 2005, following which they enjoyed a romance which ultimately ended amid negative headlines about the young Princess's boyfriend and claims he was cuplable in the violent death of a young student.
This is Paolo's story, as told exclusively to the Mail on Sunday:
PAOLO ON HIS FIRST MEETING WITH SARAH, DUCHESS OF YORK (June 2005):
"It was at a dinner in June 2005. I had no idea who Sarah was. I'd
heard of the Queen but I thought Sarah'd been married to a king and
he'd died or something. And I'd heard of Prince Charles and Diana and
William and Harry but that was it. I didn't know how Sarah was related
to them."
"I simply thought she was the most charming woman I'd ever met. She was so much fun."
"We all got drunk that evening and Sarah and I exchanged mobile numbers."
PAOLO'S FIRST MEETING WITH PRINCESS BEATRICE (July 2005):
Speaking about Princess Beatrice, whom he claims to have been the 'love of his life', Paolo says of their first meeting at the French chateau owned by Sarah's former lover, Paddy McNally: "It was an amazing night. Sarah, Bea and Eugenie, Sarah's two personal assistants and her fitness trainer were all partying by the pool. Sarah said: "Well, hello!" and introduced me to Bea and Eugenie."
"I thought Bea was beautiful. Beautiful is more than how you look. It's a grace and class."
According to Paolo, the Duchess set him up with her eldest daughter, despite his being six years Beatrice's senior and enjoying a reputation as a serial ladies man: "The next thing I know I'm dancing with Bea. We partied into the wee hours. After that night I think Sarah chose me for Bea because I was a personality I made her daughter laugh. It was all scripted. Sarah wanted her daughter to be happy but Bea couldn't trust guys. She was so nervous and shy."
"All her friends had boyfriends but she was concerned about "Mummy finding a man"."
"{Later} she would tell me over and over, "Mummy has overcome so much. She deserves happiness"."
"Personally I don't know what Sarah has had to overcome."
PAOLO'S THOUGHTS ON BEATRICE:
"When I met Bea I thought this is someone I can help and selfishly, she could help me to stabilise myself."
"She gave me a cause. It became almost a mission for me. She was so beautiful and amazing and sweet and I wanted her to realise it. Sarah set me up with her."
"I'd told them {the house party guests} that I was turning 25. I was born on August 1st 1982, but I thought I should make myself older because I had no idea how old anyone else was."
"Bea looked maybe 21 and Eugenie could have been 18. I'd never guessed they were only 16 and 15."
"Sarah said: "You should go into town and party!". She didn't go. I went with Alex, Sam, Paul, Bea and one of Bea's best friends, Sara. We went to Club 55 for lunch, where I was seated next to Bea, then to Nikki Beach."
"We went on to dinner and back to Club 55 for more drinks. The waiter said: "You should have a bottle of champagne and pop the cork." And he brought 17 bottles, one for everyone at the table. I opened them and started spraying people. When Bea jumped on the couch I sprayed her."
"The day probably cost me 30,000 euros. We wound up getting back around 7am and I had to be up after only three or four hours sleep because someone they called "the Duke" was arriving and he wanted to have lunch at noon."
PAOLO ON MEETING PRINCE ANDREW:
"I was still drunk and had the worst headache in my life. I said: "Who is this Duke?" and they said "Charles's brother"."
"When he had arrived the girls went up and hugged him and he hugged Fergie and kissed her on the cheek. They were like best friends. I've never seen divorced people who have such a good relationship."
"He's a very nice man. We talked about helicopters and golf. His life seemed very boring. He never smoked, never drank anything except water. He went to bed early."
PAOLO ON ASKING BEATRICE FOR A DATE:
"It was August 4th. We were celebrating Bea's birthday because it fell on August 8th and she had to spend it with her father in Britain. Sarah asked me to arrange a party."
"This time Sarah was with us {at Club 55}. I was seated next to Bea and I gave her a Jamaican-style bracelet because we were all planning to meet up in Jamaica."
"I paid for everything. A woman doesn't bring out money in front of me, princess or not."
"The rose and white wine was flowing. Eugenie didn't drink and Bea maybe had two drinks but she kept herself under control. She knows her limits. Sarah drinks like a fish."
"After lunch we went on a yacht. The wine was still flowing. I said to Alex: "I think I'm going to make a move on Bea"."
The friend told the Duchess of York about Paolo's plans, following which Alex told him: "Sarah wants you to kiss her."
"I said: "Are you kidding me? You just asked the girls' mother if I can kiss her?"
PAOLO ON STAYING AT THE DUKE OF YORK'S HOME OF ROYAL LODGE, WINDSOR:
"I was still in the South of France when Sarah and Bea rang me from Balmoral. I said I would be in London the next day before flying back to New York and Sarah said they were leaving that day to go to Richard Branson's safari place in South Africa. Why didn't I come over for tea at Royal Lodge and then we could all go to the airport. Bea gave me a tour of the place."
In September 2005: "I stayed at Royal Lodge some
weekends. I had my own bedroom there where I kept my clothes. I had
Sunday lunch many weekends with the Duke and Sarah. Its hard for Bea
because her family is a mess. Bea loves her granny {the Queen} and just wishes her
mother could have a relationship with her but that cant happen until
the Duke of Edinburgh dies."
PAOLO ON ROMANCING BEATRICE:
Paolo sent Beatrice a text message as she flew to New York: "To BEA from PML. You're there. I'm here. Just want to say Hi, Baci {Italian for 'kisses'}. Paolo."
"Bea said it was a beautiful moment. She woke from a nap and the steward said: "Your Royal Highness, this is for you"."
Sarah was happy about the blossoming romance: "She told me: "I see a sparkle in Bea that I haven't seen in a long time." She said: "You guys are great together"."
SARAH, BEATRICE & EUGENIE'S 10-DAY HOLIDAY IN JAMAICA:
"I arrived first with my brother {Roberto}. Sarah came the next day. Round Hill was the perfect place for a love affair. The villa where I stayed had a deck from where you could watch the sun setting over the water, the most gorgeous sunsets I'd ever seen."
"Bea initially stayed next door to the villa I was renting with my brother. Two seconds after she arrived with her mother and Eugenie she came over to have a big hug and a kiss."
THE 'EPIC' DRUG TAKING DURING THE ROYAL HOLIDAY IN JAMAICA:
"There was always a spliff in somebody's hand, day and night, throughout Jamaica. It was non-stop."
"Alex arrived about a day or two after we did. Before then my brother was smoking some spliffs but not in front of Sarah because he didn't know her."
"When Alex arrived everything changed. A lot of smoking was done. The moment Alex walked into his villa he said to one of the staff: "Jimmyjum, we need some products. We need party favours. We need ganja boy and let's go skiing {slang for cocaine}". He said: "Let's hit the slopes tonight."
"Sarah and Bea and everybody heard him. Everyone laughed and Jimmyjum was on his way. The first night after he arrived Alex rolled four big spliffs and there was wine, drinking, music, partying."
"The spliffs were passed around in the living area by the pool. Bea and Eugenie did not take a hit and I dont smoke marijuana because it makes me paranoid. I was sitting with Bea on one couch and Alex, Eugenie, Sarah and Bea were jumping around and dancing, having fun."
"Sarah was drunk and she got mellow and relaxed and she was funny. Shes hysterical. We stayed up until three or four that morning. Bea was just drinking. The whole time I knew her I saw her drunk maybe once or twice but usually she would just get a little tipsy, giggly."
"In the van {used to travel around the island} Nico smoked a spliff while Bea watched. Sarah was in the seat behind her. And one day we took a boat ride for a picnic on the river and we all posed with one of the boatmen who was holding a spliff and a huge bud {marijuana leaf}."
"On our way to one of our next hotels in Negril, Sarah said we had to visit an old friend of Paddy McNallys, an English artist who had dropped out in Jamaica and become a hippy. He produced a huge bag of marijuana and a spliff was rolled and then he gave the bag to Sarah and said, This is for you. You take it and have fun! Roberto said, We have to make a picture of this.
"On the way to Jakes Hotel, Alex said, Stop here! It was a tiny little hut and Alex said, Well be right back with some goodies.
"He and Roberto came back with what looked like a cake, only it was weed cake, and they also bought some psychedelic mushrooms."
"At about 12 Nico came out of his room He said more than half the weed cake had been eaten. Ive never been that f***** up in my life," he said. "I saw this face with a tongue coming at me"."
PAOLO TELLS BEATRICE ABOUT HIS 'VIOLENT' PAST:
When reports about Beatrice's romance hit the headlines, it was claimed
Paolo had been involved in a violent attack following which a student
died of injuries sustained to his head. Paolo was initially believed to
have thrown the fatal punch, and charged with manslaughter. This charge
was later retracted and downgraded to assault and battery.
Says Paolo: "We were in a pool a few days later when I told her
{Beatrice} about the fist fight. I took her hands and held them in mine
and I said: "I have to tell you something"."
Beatrice's reaction to Paolo's confession was: "Paolo, I know you.
My mother knows you. If you say you were not guilty, it's true. It will
be all right. Let's just think about us. That's what matters."
THE END OF THE RELATIONSHIP AS THE SUN BREAKS THE STORY OF PAOLO'S PAST:
"I was with Bea and Sarah when the story broke about my court case and our relationship. I had just had four screws and a metal plate put in my shoulder after a skiing accident. I was in terrible pain and Sarah said that in 20 minutes I had to do an interview with The Sun about the court case. She said because Rebekah Wade was her friend they would "handle it"."
In April 2006, Sarah told Paolo she needed to "protect" herself and "protect Bea".
"After the story broke they put out a statement saying I was no longer seeing Bea but it wasnt true. Bea was so excited. She said, Youre going to stay at Mummys friends place in Trump Tower.
"But after I had to go to court and was told I was in violation of my probation Bea suddenly got very cold. She said, Paolo this cant happen."
"Her mother had told her to break it off. I realised immediately though she didnt tell me. I sent her a letter with flowers saying I understood. [It said] It ended. Im here. Youre there. Love you always, Paolo."
"We finally broke up at the end of May. I said, We cant be seen publicly. This is so difficult. And she said, I know."
PAOLO ON HOW SARAH TURNED HER BACK ON HIM FOLLOWING THE ALLEGATIONS:
"I want to see good in Sarah but now when I look in her eyes I see Medusa. She's stone."
Paolo last spoke to Sarah by phone in September 2006: "I told her: "I feel shunned by all of you. I was loyal but no one was loyal to me."
PAOLO'S REFLECTIONS ON SARAH & BEATRICE:
"Bea just wanted Mummy to be happy. She was selfless. It made me feel sorry for Bea because she spent so much time concentrating on her mothers happiness. Sarah talks about wanting a loving home for her daughters but she thrives on running around the world."
"She says she hates it when celebrities do things for charities just to promote themselves but she does her charities because one day she hopes that when Prince Philip passes away, if she doesnt remarry Andrew, she at least will be invited back into the bosom of the Royal Family. It's a mockery."
"Bea so much wants to be like her mother yet what does she see? Her mother partying and just encouraging her daughters to do the same thing."
"Sarah is a 47-year-old who wants to be 25 again and that makes me worried for Bea. She is so humble for an 18-year-old girl who is fifth in line to the throne. There's nothing bad to say about Bea. She is an angel."
