No Pomp & Circumstance For Alexandra Second Time Around PDF Print E-mail

Whilst several of the royal wives of Windsor, including Diana Spencer and Sarah Ferguson, had embarked on a standard education consisting of little more demanding than time spent at finishing schools in Europe, the future Princess Alexandra had already mastered several languages including French and German.

She was to soon display her talent for linguistics — and win over a nation — as she quickly learnt Danish so as to allow her to interact with her new family and, more importantly, her mother-in-law's subjects.

With a new public life and role to embrace, it was to be some years before the royal couple decided to start a family.

On 28th August 1999 the Royal Palace announced the birth at Copenhagen University Hospital of Alexandra and Joachim's first son, Prince Nikolai William Alexander Frederik. A second son followed just under three years later with the birth of Prince Felix Henrik Valdemar Christian on July 22nd 2002.

Sadly, the family unity was to end with the collapse of the royal marriage when, on 16th September 2004, the couple declared their intention to separate. Despite the ensuing divorce, which has the unwelcome addition of being the first in the Danish Royal Family since 1846, Alexandra and Joachim maintained admirably friendly relations in public, frequently appearing at events with their children.

Recently, Prince Joachim's girlfriend, Marie Cavallier, was invited to an intimate family gathering where she met his ex-wife and some of his closest friends. However, as yet, there are no signs that this union will also result in a marriage.

Although she will no longer be an official member of the Royal Family following her second marriage, it's widely believed Alexandra will continue to work closely with the organisations for which she did so much during her years as one of the royal family's most popular figures. These include the Danish Red Cross Youth, Danish Association of the Blind and the Danish UNICEF Committee.

There will be many throughout Denmark and the world who'll be raising a glass to wish nothing but good health and happiness to the newly-titled
Alexandra, countess of Frederiksborg, as she walks down the aisle today to a new life and destiny on the arm of the man she loves.

Several books have been written about Alexandra of Denmark:

Prinsesse Alexandra by Ninka (1996)
Alexandra by Trine Larsen (1998)
Alexandra: Prinsesse af Danmark by Torben Ölholm (2001)

I wish Alexandra all the best. The Danish RF handled the divorce in a very civilised manner, Queen Margrethe did not have the worry about what would be in the papers next, and did not feel the need to deprive Alexandra Royal status this is a family with class.
