And so it has happened: a new royal Princess has been born on the birthday of Queen Elizabeth II, Mary of Denmark having given birth to the first Danish princess since 1946.
Already proud parents of a son and heir, Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary of Denmark are tonight celebrating the birth of their baby daughter at 4.02pm on Saturday afternoon (local time).
Crowds had gathered at Copenhagen University Hospital following an announcement from the Palace that the 35-year-old Princess had gone into labour.
According to Annenette Gregers, the royal correspondent of Denmark's Ekstra Bladet newspaper: "There are lots of cameras and journalists and members of the public who have gathered outside waiting for any news."
The birth of the unnamed baby so quickly after the palace announcement likely threw, it coming so quickly in comparison to the long wait surrounding the birth of Prince Christian in October 2005.
As Ms Gregers recalled: "But you must remember that when she gave birth to Prince Christian she went into labour two weeks early."
There are likely to be many celebrations for the birth of the little Princess. No female has been born to the Danish royal family since the birth in 1946 of Queen Margrethe's sister, Queen Anne-Marie of Greece, the wife of ex-King Constantine.
Any bets for the little Princess being called Elizabeth in honour of her distant royal relation across the waters?
