Page 1 of 4 Well, this
is possibly one royal 'portrait' you never expected to see. No, we don't mean poor
Diana sitting happily on her husband's knee. That's a scene which, in
all sincerity, I think we would all agree we would have liked to have been witness to for many more years to come, be that husband Prince Charles or another
man whom Diana adored. We refer to this fun image we've acquired of a young Princess of Wales wearing the kind of attire (a pair of fake plastic breasts hung over her clothes) which many 'normal' people laughingly (and embarrassingly) wear on such occasions as stag nights or office parties. This endearing photo of a clearly very happy Charles and Diana proves that, despite all that we've been told over the preceding years of royal hearbreak and tragedy, the Prince and Princess of Wales did once have fun together. Look at how Charles has his hand gently placed around his wife's waist. See, they were once openly happy and affectionate with each other behind Palace doors, rather than purely putting on a front at photocalls stage-managed by the Palace press office. All of the touching images on this page, along with more which we'll feature in the week ahead, were taken at a private royal Christmas party in around December 1983. In those days, the whole Royal Family gathered at Windsor Castle. The party included the extended family, including the likes of the Duke and Duchess of Kent and their glamorous young daughter, Lady Helen. However, in the late 1980s, the Queen decided to tone down the family Christmas and moved the annual gathering to Sandringham House. From thereon, only immediate family members were invited to join her and Prince Philip for the festive gathering. As you can see from our exclusive photo above, even in the days when she was famous for her "Shy Di" disposition, thanks to the fact she was prone to blush easily (a trait son William has inherited), the Princess had a truly wonderful, all-embracing sense of humour, one which sometimes landed her in just a little trouble. |
