Page 3 of 3 As she came face-to-face with the MP and shook his hand in the official line-up, Her Majesty lowered her voice. Prescott thought nothing of this and instinctively leaned forward to hear what the royal visitor was saying. Bingo! Cue the photographers snapping the image of the political bruiser and famed republican bowing down before the Queen. Looking back on the incident, Prescott fumed: "I was fooled". Even almost two decades later, this act of what appeared to be a planned trick by the Queen continued to rankle Prescott as he embarked on his new life as Deputy Prime Minister following Labour's landslide victory of 1997. Chatting with Crown Prince Willem-Alexander in 1998, John Prescott recalled his 1981 meeting with Queen Elizabeth II. Astounded by the Prince's comment, the Deputy PM replied: "How do you know that?". Appearing to acknowledge that the royals have their secrets, ones which they openly share between themselves, Willem-Alexander said nothing more but simply winked at the bemused MP. It's possibly one knowing wink of which the Queen herself may well have approved! Comment on this article
