Channel Four has defended its decision to broadcast
paparazzi images showing the aftermath of the crash which killed Diana,
Princess of Wales, Dodi Al Fayed and Henri Paul.
Speaking amid a growing storm of criticism in Britain, where the story is now headline news, a Channel Four spokesman defended the contents of Diana: The Witnesses In The Tunnel, saying the images have been "carefully and
sensitively selected".
Continued the spokesman: "These photographs
are an important and accurate eye-witness record of how events unfolded
after the crash."
"We acknowledge there is great public sensitivity surrounding pictures of the victims and these have not been included. Some photographs will be of the scene inside the tunnel but in none of
the pictures is it possible to identify Diana or indeed any of the
crash victims."
"Only one image shows the occupants of the car after the crash and it
has been appropriately obscured to avoid any unwarranted intrusion into
their privacy or that of their families."
The Channel is defying calls for the June 6th broadcast to be shelved, inviting journalists into their headquarters in London to watch a preview of the documentary in an attempt to halt the criticism.
The broadcaster has also condemned as "misleading and inaccurate" some of this morning's newspaper reporting about the contents of the show.
Comment: Channel 4 are disrespectful to the memory of Princess Diana and have no decency to apologise to the princes about their bitter disappointment of broadcasting the documentary tonight. I hope that the good british public are watching the football on sky sports tonight instead of the documentary on channel 4!
