Falklands 25: Anne & Tim Salute The Navy PDF Print E-mail

It's rare that we see a Royal Princess wearing a bow tie, but last night Princess Anne wore a full military uniform to match that of her Navy officer husband, Vice Admiral Tim Laurence.

The royal couple were guests of honour at a dinner in London marking the 25th anniversary of the liberation of the Falkland Islands.

The Princess and her husband of fourteen years were at the Painted Hall in the historic sea port of Greenwich for the Heroes Dinner.

The event was held at the end of a day of official ceremonies in Britain and the South Atlantic marking the exact day on which the British Task Force marched into Stanley, the capital of the British colony.

A total of 255 British military and civilian personnel, three islanders and 600 Argentinian soldiers were killed in the 74-day conflict.

Soldiers who were awarded medals for particular acts or courage and gallantry, as well as the families of those soldiers who died during or after the conflict, were amongst hundreds of guests invited to attend last night's dinner at the  Old Royal Naval College as representatives of the 28,000 personnel who served in the Falklands conflict.

The dinner was held to raise funds for a planned Armed Forces Memorial which will list the names of all those killed serving their monarch and country since the end of World War II in 1945.

Before the official dinner, Anne and Tim attended a service of remembrance in the Chapel of St. Peter and Paul before joining dignitaries including Sara Jones CBE DL, the widow of Lieutenant Colonel 'H' Jones who was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his leadership and bravery during the battle for Goose Green.

This battle was a major turning point in Britain's ultimately successful fight against the Argentine occupying forces.
