Walking across the paddock
at a racecourse in the 1980s, Princess Michael of
Kent distinctly unamused to find herself on the receiving end of a
wolf whistle.
Although the culprit was never confirmed, the finger of blame was immediately pointed at the live wire Sarah, Duchess of York, who was seen laughing in the vicinity with her
sister-in-law, Diana.
But could the lady behind the whistle have been the equally high-spirited Princess of
Wales, for according to Duran Duran star Simon Le Bon, it would seem the cheeky Princess had
form.....
Speaking to the BBCs Radio Times magazine to promote the Corporation's coverage of next Sunday's Concert For
Diana, the singer (pictured with the Princess) has recalled his embarrassment at the moment the future Queen
let out a wolf whistle in his direction.
Explains Le Bon: "She and I used to go to
the same fitness club - Chelsea Harbour in London. One day I was on the
running machine. I jumped off because one of my shoelaces
had come undone, and she wolf-whistled at me across the room, and
yelled, like
a brickie, 'Nice legs! I'd recognise that bum anywhere!'"
Says the star, whose band was a favourite of the young Princess: "I was quite
taken aback, actually, and quietly got back on the machine with a red face."
One of her most famous and celebrated characteristics - one which wasn't so warmly welcomed by some behind Palace walls - the Princess's cheeky sense of
humour spread far and wide, as Status Quo star Rick Parfitt recalls.
