Few women celebrating their 60th birthday can look forward to a promotion. Yet thats the destiny awaiting the Duchess of Cornwall in the years ahead. A new poll suggests that a majority of the British public want to see Camilla officially installed as the Consort of King Charles, while more than ever are keen to see a 'Queen Camilla' sit on the throne. What a difference a decade makes...... Released to mark the Duchess of Cornwalls birthday today, the Daily Telegraph/YouGov poll shows that 61 per cent of 817 people questioned would like to see the Prince of Wales' second wife become his official Consort upon his accession to the throne. The poll is the second welcome present for Camilla in recent days, the paper having earlier published a very warm piece about the Duchess to mark her landmark birthday. In 1999, a poll published following Charles and Camilla's first public outing as a couple showed that 76% of Britons were opposed to Camilla becoming Queen. That figure had dropped to 64% in a similar poll undertaken a year later. However, these polls can vary dramatically, although some - such as those undertaken by the official polling organisations - are more regulated than others. In February this year, the Daily Express - widely seen as pro-Diana and fairly anti-Camilla - released the results of a phone poll which showed that 90% of their readers were ardently against a 'Queen Camilla'. Although Clarence House stated that the plan is for the former Mrs Parker Bowles to take on the title of Princess Consort when her husband becomes King, aides have privately suggested that the longterm plan is for Camilla to take on the title which will be hers as the wife of the monarch: that is Her Majesty Queen Camilla. |
