German Magazine Upsets Kate & William PDF Print E-mail

Poor Kate Middleton. Only weeks after a plea — purportedly instigated by Prince William and her father, Michael — was sent to editors of British newspapers asking that her privacy be respected, the exact location of the London flat used by Kate and her royal boyfriend has been exposed by a German magazine.

Das Neue has not only published a picture and details of the location but also printed a bright red arrow to pinpoint the exact flat used as a bolthole by the couple to escape the rigours and pressures —and complete lack of privacy — of the official Royal court.

A police source tells tonight's London Evening Standard: "This is just irresponsible. Everything has to be reviewed in light of this". Understandably, in light of the London bombs of July 2005, the Prince and his girlfriend have reportedly not returned to the flat since the magazine hit the streets.

The German media have a history of upsetting the Windsors. In September 1994, a German magazine published photos of Prince Charles apparently standing nude in a window during a private holiday whilst a newspaper published what was alleged to be a photograph of Diana trapped in the Mercedes following the crash which ultimately took her life. The Grimaldis of Monaco, most especially Prince Ernst August of Hanover, have also suffered major intrusions of privacy at the hands of the apparently largely unregulated German media.

Despite this blip in their private life, William and Kate (whose relationship happily appears to be going from strength to strength) will be looking forward to the coming Christmas holiday when they will be together at Sandringham House on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day morning. This is an incredibly rare privilege for a person who is not an official member of the Royal Family and offers an insight into just how important Kate is in the young Prince's life. We can only hope that the lack of 'training' and support offered to his mother, the-then Lady Diana Spencer, has taught the Royal Family some much needed lessons in how to handle those who may one day officially join "The Firm".

The fact the Queen has invited the impressively loyal and discreet Kate to attend what is essentially a private family gathering on such an important religious holiday invariably reignites speculation as to whether Kate is also a hugely important figure in the future of the monarchy itself.

That is an answer we will all anxiously await...
