Today, thousands across America and around the globe are
marking the day on which, 30 years ago, Elvis Presley finally left the
building.
But whilst he may continue to reign supreme in the hearts of millions
of fans, as one young singer discovered to his amusement, Elvis never
really made much of an impression on a man who truly will be 'The
King': Prince Charles.
Even his own son, Prince Harry, has cheekily quipped that the Prince of Wales is “boring”.
If that wasn't bad enough, Prince William previously went a step further, laughingly telling onlookers during a visit
to Wales that he thinks "papa" is an "old fogey", especially when it comes to his taste in music.
Unfortunately, it’s a view which the unwitting Prince Charles has a tendency to
re-enforce through his own actions.
Visiting a community centre in North Tyneside in 1997, the heir to the throne listened intently as
24-year-old Gavin Lovell put on a special performance, singing a song which included the line "you touch my hand and I’m a king".
The royal guest of honour tapped his foot and enthusiastically clapped
as Gavin enjoyed his moment in the spotlight, following which the
Prince went over to speak with the young performer.
It wasn't quite a conversation Gavin had expected as the Prince asked if he'd written the song as it really was very good.
Cue an embarrassed pause and the shuffling of feet as Gavin had to politely explain that, no, The Wonder of You
was written by a man a little more famous than himself.
It was, in fact, a Number 1 hit for Elvis Aaron Presley in 1970, when the Prince was just 22 years old and being promoted as the
modern
face of the Royal Family.
Oops!
It would appear the man who will be King doesn’t have much of an
affinity for
the man who, despite the scandals which surrounded his life, has - in stark constrast to
the often beleaguered Prince Charles - never been in any danger of losing his crown.
