World's Longest Reigning Monarch Hospitalised PDF Print E-mail

In July doctors carried out spinal surgery on the King following years of severe back pain caused by lumbar spinal stenosis. The condition, which causes a narrowing of the spinal canal, is primarily a symptom of aging.

King Bhumibol has also undergone a hernia operation in 2003 and, more significantly, a heart operation in 1995 after doctors diagnosed a constriction to the monarch’s arteries. This operation came eight years after the monarch underwent treatment for an irregular heartbeat.

Offering no further details about the monarch’s latest health scare, the Royal Palace says that the King is due to stay in hospital for "a certain period".
