Pomp, Circumstance & Controversy As The Queen Welcomes The King of Saudi Arabia PDF Print E-mail
Written by Joanne Leyland
Tuesday, 30 October 2007

In response, the Saudi monarch warned of "ominous signs of war and conflict in the world", whilst also asking Britain for help to solve the Palestinian issue.

The King also said that British Muslims should be model citizens, telling his audience:
"I should like to take this opportunity to call upon our Muslim brethren living in Britain to be honest and upright Muslims and worthy British citizens, striving to build and construct so that they may convey the true image of the principles of Islam - those eternal principles of love, mercy and moderation."

Ahead of the first State Visit to Britain by a Saudi monarch for twenty years, the King himself caused controversy by claiming in a TV interview that his nation had warned the British Government - at that time led by Tony Blair - two days before the 7/7 bombings of 2005 that a terror attack on London was imminent. The King appeared to suggest that this warning went unheeded.

Meanwhile, debate continues to rage in political circles in particular as to why the government of Tony Blair ruled that a major fraud case relating to a Saudi arms deal should not proceed as it was not in the "national interest".

Amongst the royals attending Tuesday evening's banquet following an earlier display of pomp and pageantry on Horse Guards Parade were the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall, the Princess Royal and Tim Laurence and the Dukes of York, Kent and Gloucester.

I think I heard the Queen pointedly referred to the King as Keeper of the 2 Mosques at the beginning and the end of her speech - would I be correct Laura/Joanne in assuming she meant the two holy mosques in Saudi Arabia? In which case the Queen might have been introducing his appeal to the Muslims resident in UK.

Is it just possible that it was the main point of the King's visit?
