Having already stopped off at Westminster, the royal roadshow arrived at St. Pancras station on Euston Road at 19.00 hours last night for the official opening of the newly refurbished rail terminal.

And whilst she may feel she’s seen it all in her life of duty, this was possibly the first time the Queen had spoken before a pair of lovers who remained up close and personal, even before the eyes of royalty.

Just hours after travelling to the Houses of Parliament by horse-drawn carriage, the Queen and Prince Philip were propelled back into the modern age of transport as they arrived at the Hotel Arch at St. Pancras Station for the start of an event heralding a new era for British travel.

As well as opening the newly refurbished station, the Queen was also marking the commencement in service of High Speed 1, the 68-mile, £5.8 billion Channel Tunnel Rail Link which will take commuters at even greater speeds from London to Folkestone in Kent, where the Channel Tunnel links the British Isles to Europe.

Before the opening, though, the Queen met the young lovers whose presence at St. Pancras denotes the increasingly  forgotten romance of rail travel.
