The
Royal Household in Spain has revealed that the eldest daughter of King Juan
Carlos is to separate from her husband of twelve years.
Infanta Elena de Bourbon married banker Jaime de Marichalar in Seville
Cathedral in March 1995 in a ceremony which was watched by approximately 800m TV viewers across the globe.
According to the palace, this is a temporary separation.
Amongst those to witness the first Spanish royal wedding for 89 years at the gothic cathedral in the capital of Andalusia
were the Prince of Wales - who immediately rushed home to England to
see Prince Harry perform in a school play - as well as the queens of
Belgium and The Netherlands.
Despite
the fact Elena is the first child of the Spanish monarch, it
is her brother Felipe who will ultimately inherit the throne due to the
constitutional law which, as it stands, favours the male heir over any
older female siblings.
