Does A New PM Herald G'Bye To The Monarchy Down Under? PDF Print E-mail

John Howard was widely recognised – and also criticised by his opponents – for having helped to 'save' the Queen and the monarchy at the time of the Australian referendum of November 1999, the result of which was a relatively narrow victory in favour of the Crown.

However, as seen before the launch of the election campaign when the subject once again made headline news in July, the debate continues to rumble on.

Just last month, a leading republican suggested that the death of Elizabeth II will also herald the death knell on the role of the monarchy in Australia.

Although polls aren't always to be relied upon - Friday's Daily Telegraph in Sydney suggested John Howard was possibly about to see all his Christmas dreams come true with a narrow election victory - earlier polls have suggested that there is little public appetite for a King Charles and Princess/Queen Consort Camilla.

While polls in Britain have shown steady increases in support for the Prince of Wales and his second wife, a similar poll (albeit now a little aged) carried out at the start of 2006 - just a few months after the couple married - suggested Charles and Camilla are yet to win over Australia.

The couple are yet to tour Australia - where the city of Sydney is currently home to a major exhibition on Diana, Princess of Wales - New Zealand or Canada, all of which it has been suggested may ultimately choose to elect a homegrown President following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
