Having left the bar, Henri Paul is said by Mr Willaumez to have bumped into a colleague.

Giving evidence about Paul's allegedly drunken state in an official statement he gave to police in the aftermath of the crash ten years ago, Mr Willaumez said: "He had not a precise walk. He was walking like a clown, a little bit like a clown."

However, this description has now come under intense scrutiny from Richard Keen QC, who is representing Henri Paul's parents at the British inquest into the deaths of Diana and Dodi.

Mr Willaumez latterly admitted he shocked by his original use of the word "clown" and asked for legal advice with regards to his original statement. The barman latterly said: "I'm going to change my words."

The QC also informed the witness that his timings with regards to the visits made by Henri Paul to the Ritz hotel bar "did not fit" with those given by other members of staff at the establishment which is owned by Dodi's father, Mohamed Al Fayed.

Whilst CCTV footage has shown Henri Paul bending low to tie his shoelaces, the clown-like walk was not captured on film because there are no cameras in the bar.
