The Royal Palace in Bangkok has announced the death of King Bhumibol of Thailand's sister following a long battle with abdominal cancer.

Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, Princess Galyani Vadhana was the elder sister of the world’s longest reigning monarch.

The Princess had been undergoing treatment in the Siriraj Hospital in Bangkok since last June.

It was in this same hospital that the King was treated in October 2007 after suffering stroke-like symptoms from which he is continuing to recover following his release from hospital in early November.

The princess died today (Wednesday) having suffered kidney failure and weakened breathing. She was 84 years old.
