Buckingham Palace says the Queen is "very saddened" by the death of Sir Edmund Hillary, the New Zealand adventurer who conquered Mount Everest just days before her Coronation.

According to the royal household, the Queen is sending a personal message of condolence to the family of Sir Edmund following last night's news of his death.

The Queen most recently met Sir Edmund - a Garter Knight - at the Garter Ceremony at Windsor Castle in 2004. Previous to this, the two octogenarians who shared the glory on Coronation Day 1953 met at an official garden party during a royal tour of New Zealand in 2002.

The New Zealand announced today that Sir Edmund Hillary will be accorded a full state funeral.
