Burrell has revealed that the Queen voiced her concern about Diana, Princess of
Wales' romance with Dodi Al Fayed.
Questioned today about the monarchs view of her
former daughter-in-laws romance with the playboy son of Harrods owner Mohamed Al Fayed, Burrell told the inquest: "Her Majesty
was concerned about the future."
The Queen is also alleged to have mused that
Diana appeared to have become "rather over-excited".
Significantly, though, these comments were made in the aftermath of Dianas death, during a
private
meeting Burrell had requested with the Queen.
Burrell wished to speak to his former boss as he was concerned about the
number of documents which were being shredded by the princess's mother,
Frances Shand-Kydd.
Although unhappy at being asked to reveal details of his meeting with the Queen during his final appearance at the inquest, Burrell has previously told how Her Majesty informed him at a private meeting in December 1997: "There are powers at work in this country about which we have no knowledge."
In further cross-examination from Mohamed Al Fayeds legal team, Burrell was
also asked by Michael Mansfield QC about a suggestion categorically denied by the
Dukes personal secretary that Prince Philip had called Dodi Fayed "an oily
bedhopper".
Replied Burrell, who earlier this week dismissed Mohamed Al Fayed's claims that Prince Philip was part of a plot to "murder" the mother of his grandchildren: "He [Philip] has made
a few mistakes in the past. I cannot possibly think he would say that."
