It wasn’t long before rock royalty were queuing up to spend thousands of pounds on distinctive pieces from the Linley range.

Patrons include Sir Mick Jagger and Sir Elton John, both of whom were friends and associates of the Queen’s sister, who died in 2002.

Asked about his famous fans, Linley said of the welcome patronage of famous faces who are also friends and associates of his family: "I'm just lucky that people like Elton are so generous and like the work."

A great-grandson of King George V and grandson of King George VI, Linley has openly admitted that he’s unsure whether his royal connections have helped his career, saying of his unique position: "Whether my family has helped my career or not is hard to say."

However, the Queen herself isn’t averse to promoting her nephew’s business.

During a visit to Africa in November 1999, the monarch presented the wife of President Rawlings of Ghana with an official gift of a jewellery box, revealing of its provenance: "I have brought you a box made by my nephew, David. He is very good at making things in wood."
