William Wales: Prince, Pilot...Pressman?! PDF Print E-mail

Prince William witnessed first hand the vastly contrasting relationship which existed between his late mother Diana, Princess of Wales and the media.

Even before she married the Prince of Wales in July 1981, Lady Diana Spencer made a private visit to the offices of Independent Television News in London.

Here she met journalists and newsreaders, including Selina Scott, and enjoyed a tour of the facilities as part of her training for a life before the cameras.

In her final years in particular, the princess often invited selected journalists to Kensington Palace, where some such as the Daily Mirror's then Editor Piers Morgan enjoyed a rare insight into the life of the princess and her sons.

During one visit, which he documented in his best-selling diaries, Morgan was amazed to hear Prince William openly telling his mother how he'd recently watched panellists on the BBC quiz show Have I Got News For You making jokes about "Mrs Parker Bowles".

Although her relationship with the media was undoubtedly one of the most complex that ever existed between representatives of the Fourth Estate and a public figure, Diana appreciated - and it could be argued feared - the power of the press.

As she perhaps came to realise, it is a press which has the ability to make or break a person, be they private or public, rich or poor.

While they too openly bemoan the often unrestrained and unregulated actions of paparazzos who document their private lives and loves, both William and Harry have followed their late mother in showing an interest in the workings of the mainstream media.
