In April 2000, the then Royal Correspondent of ITN and his cameraman
were following the Wales family on
their
annual skiing holiday in Klosters when it was the scenes which took place after the cameras stopped rolling that were of most interest.
As Nicholas Owen later revealed, he found himself being shadowed by William and Harry as he worked to produce a package on the royal skiing holiday for a TV news bulletin later that day.
Explained Owen of his unique encounter: "It
was slightly intimidating. No journalist
likes his subject to see what he's up to. But they were interested, good-natured
and extremely polite."
The princes stayed by Owen's side on the ski slopes long enough to watch the ITN crew editing the raw footage of Charles, William and Harry at the official photocall which had ended just minutes earlier.
The broadcaster revealed the reaction of the brothers as they saw themselves appear on the monitor, saying: "There
was a good deal of nudging and joshing, plenty of laughing at one another as their
shots came up on the screen. But they
were also fascinated with the process of sending the thing."
"It made a real change
from William's old shyness and antagonism. I think he's learnt to handle the
media - he actually called me Mr Owen."
In what may be a pithy comment considering the discussions which are reportedly ongoing inside Clarence House, the journalist and presenter said hed be happy to team up with the princes again in the
future, declaring: "If they ever want any more experience at ITN, I am certain we could
make room for them."
