Will The Queen & Philip Say 'Bonjour' To Carla? PDF Print E-mail

Over the decades Prince Philip has been duty-bound to make small talk with some of the most famous and infamous First Ladies the world has ever seen, from Mrs Khruschev of Russia to America’s very own queen, Jacqueline Kennedy.

However, the Foreign Office is yet to reveal whether the Duke will be welcoming onto the diplomatic stage Carla Bruni, the woman whose promotion from model-turned singer to First Lady has provoked headlines across the globe following her marriage to the President of France.

The weekend marriage of French President Nicolas Sarkozy and his glamorous girlfriend has prompted speculation as to whether she’ll be accompanying her husband on next month’s State Visit to Britain.

The couple married in a private ceremony inside the Elysee Palace on Saturday morning, three months after the former model fell for the twice-divorced President whose poll ratings have plunged since he chose to put his private life into the public domain.

The wedding comes just weeks after the British press questioned what sleeping arrangements would be put into place at Windsor Castle if the 53-year-old president wished to be accompanied to Britain by his new girlfriend.

The President is due to arrive at Windsor Castle next month for his first trip across the English Channel to meet the Queen and other members of the royal family since he was elected to office last year.

Asked if the President will be accompanied by Carla, whose previous beaus have included rockers Sir Mick Jagger and Eric Clapton, a Foreign Office spokesman says it is "too early to say" what arrangements will be put into place for next month's State Visit.

This is despite such events as this being many months in the planning.

The Royal and Spencer families had much to be thankful for in respect to the dignity and kindness shown in traumatic circumstances by the last First Lady of France.
