New Idea magazine in Australia has
made a
significant change of personnel just days after it belatedly made
headline news after the magazine exclusively revealed in January that
Prince
Harry was fighting on the front line in Afghanistan. A statement was released last week in which it was revealed that the details of Prince Harry's military combat went to press because staff at the magazine were unaware of the media blackout which had been imposed by the Ministry of Defence following secret, high-level discussions with the most senior members of the British media. In a statement detailing the staff shake-up, Pacific Magazines revealed that Suzanne Monks - the publisher of New Idea - will take on the dual roles of editorial director and deputy editor, whilst the deputy editor Mirella Cestaro will be promoted to editor-in-chief. This means that Michelle Endacott, the temporary editor on duty at the time the presses rolled with the news of Prince Harry's deployment, has been overlooked for promotion. However, despite not mentioning Ms Endacott in the press release, it was later confirmed that she will remain as editor. This has prompted critics to suggest she has attempted to shift the blame. Robyn Foyster is now on three months' paid leave before taking up the position of Editor-in-Chief at The Australian Women's Weekly.
