William Goes Out of Fashion PDF Print E-mail
Written by Joanne Leyland
Monday, 31 March 2008
Prince Charles famously mused: "I come into fashion about once every 25 years". Now, his eldest son has discovered that, despite being this very age, he’s already very much out of fashion in his choice of wardrobe.

Whilst at least making an appearance on the annual GQ magazine ‘best-dressed list’, Prince William may be thinking he’d have preferred to be completely overlooked, for he doesn’t rank much higher in the fashion stakes than his 86-year-old grandfather.

While Prince Philip ranks at No. 33 thanks to being "a snappy chappy", the second-in-line to the throne comes in at just 16th place, to where he's relegated for having not got "the hang of age-appropriate" fashion.

Such criticism of William is nothing new.

When he and girlfriend Kate Middleton made an appearance at the Cheltenham festival in March 2007, the ultra-modern couple who would likely choose Boujis nightclub over the British Museum were condemned as being more akin to ‘Fred and Gladys’ (a.k.a. Charles and Camilla) thanks to their appearance in staid, his-and-hers country tweeds.

Still top in the royal wardrobe stakes is Prince Harry.

Although down one place from last year, the 23-year-old royal who is currently enjoying a resurgence in his popularity following his military service in Afghanistan ranks just outside the top ten, coming in at No. 12.

Now heading towards his 60th birthday, Prince Charles has something to cheer when it comes to acknowledgment of his taste in fashion, one which has altered little over the years.

The prince who has previously been hailed as "cool" and a fashion icon by the hip-hop stars Jay Z and Outkast’s Andre 3000 ranks in 25th place.

While Prince Charles is first in line to the throne, number one in the fashion stakes goes for a second year running to a man who’s more famous as 007: James Bond star Daniel Craig.

I agree Monika, though I guess it depends whose sweat is on the shirt. And some people sweat more on weekends. I would find being invited to watch a killing of a goat for Christmas dinner a real turn off though...even if I was a offered a chance glance at the real life crown jewels as enticement. I definitely prefer a table cloth where a plate is offered for my food to be presented upon. Watching a killing of a goat before dinner would definitely spoil my appetite.

Sweat on a shirt, even a light blue one, I could tolerate day after day.

Dress is a factor of FUNCTION.

Judges, Doctors, Professors dress for the job. One would think that the Monarch would dress for the FUNCTION that the Monarch is serving.

My father dressed for the occasion during 22 years of service to George V; but he never really made it to "King" altho he did love costuming and dressing up.

At least Prince Harry appears to have a variety of shirts in various colours besides light blue ones. I think I even remember a pink shirt.

Of course there was that informative article about Prince Harry's blue Klein panties given to him as a gift from Chelsy, which again I think are an excellent choice.

Chelsy so far appears to be a real smart dresser in terms of being attractive, though I realize most of her choices are possibly climate dependent. Style has a lot to do with where one lives.

I still wonder why fashion the word is still so close to the word fascist in the dictionary. Fashion seems to dictate a certain materialism which can lead to a snobbery which might not be very pleasant especially if combined with extreme nationalistic overtones with assumptions of superiority thrown into the mix.

Men can go to a function wearing the same suit and not one of them would be humiliated to the point of tears. But if a woman lands up at a function with the same dress on as another woman ...
