The First Editions: The Grand National Overshadows A Grand Old Duke PDF Print E-mail
Written by Joanne Leyland
Friday, 04 April 2008

The only other paper to feature page one coverage of the inimitable Duke who has always knowingly or unknowingly given journalists such good copy is the Daily Mail (a front page image of which I'm yet to receive).

The majority of the UK press - including The Times, The Sun, the Daily Mirror and the Daily Express - have chosen to give over much of their front pages to coverage of the impending Grand National and the appearance at Aintree racecourse of at least one of the so-called 'WAGS' (the 'wives and girlfriends' of Premiership footballers).

Although he's clearly no fan of the press and likely hates the interest his health scare has generated, is it just me or can you imagine Prince Philip might ponder this Saturday morning on the fact the news desks at some of Britain's biggest newspapers have chosen to focus primarily on "a bloody horse race" rather than give even a brief mention on the front page to the man who's devoted so much of his life to public service?

It's interesting to compare this lack of front page attention to the vast amount of banner headlines which appeared when the Duke was accused by Mohamed Al Fayed of orchestrating the "murder" of his former daughter-in-law, Diana, Princess of Wales.....a clearly far more 'appealing' page one story than any which may refer to Prince Philip's admission to hospital for the first time that the majority of us can remember.

Here's wishing the Prince a speedy recovery and an equally speedy return to shaking hands and cracking jokes with the crowds.

I agree with Monica, Prince Philip will be a real trooper, soldier etc, but he will still have to be honest about where it hurts.

Strangely, I just came back from hospital, having routine tests done today, and if anyone needs a moment of reflection related to how lucky one is, sit in a hospital for a few minutes.

I hope Prince Philip has a speedy recovery.

I don't believe for a minute, Prince Philip deserved to be blamed for Di's tragic death.

Everyone is innocent til proven guilty and I think Prince Philip the human being and HM were in a real tough situation.

And sometimes stress will weaken the body and sometimes if a situation doesn't kill you, it will make you stronger.

I can just hear Prince Philip complain about all the fuss, and I can also hear him commenting to the nurses about this and that. laughing-smiley

Hopefully the RF will unite and give HM some comfort.

Prince Philip is a real man's man and, as such, I don't think he'd want his illness to make headlines.bigsmile-smiley Can't you just hear him complain about all the 'unnecessary' fuss?
