The
Prime Minister of Australia has said that he is in no rush to remove Queen
Elizabeth II as Head of State.Speaking during an official visit to Britain, the leader whose Labour party ousted the monarchist PM John Howard from office last November stressed that he has "other fish to fry" with regards to his political agenda back home. However, speaking to the BBC, the Prime Minister also appeared not to rule out the possibility of a further referendum which would see the Australian people voting on whether they would prefer to elect a President, saying of the issue: "I am sure we will get to it in due season". "What I also said prior to the last election is that for us this is not a top-order priority". The Prime Minister also refused to be drawn when asked about how his nation would react to the reign of a King Charles and Queen Camilla, saying: "A nice try in terms of the timeline, but I am not going to deliver one to you". It was in November 1999 that Australians went to the polls for a hard-fought referendum which ultimately saw the monarch's role assured for the immediate future.
