The jury
at the High Court inquest have returned a verdict of unlawful killing
of Diana, Princess of Wales and Dodi Fayed due to the grossly negligent
driving of the following vehicles (the paparazzi) and the Mercedes
driven by
Henri Paul. This verdict - which is the most serious of the options open to the jury - was delivered by 9 of the 11 jurors. The
jury declared that Henri Paul (left) - the acting head of security at Mohamed
Al Fayed's Ritz hotel in Paris - was drunk at the wheel of the Mercedes
and that his judgment was impaired due to his alcohol intake. The jury also returned a unanimous verdict that the couple died because they were not wearing seatbelts as the car crashed in the Alma tunnel in Paris shortly before 12.30am on Sunday 31st August 1997. The coroner, Lord Justice Scott Baker has now thanked the jurors for their six months of service and the proceedings have ended. Onlookers inside the court report that Mohamed Al Fayed remained impassive during the proceedings. He has repeatedly alleged that Diana, Dodi and Henri Paul were the victims of a murder plot carried out by the British intelligence services on the orders of Prince Philip. Diana's sister, Lady Sarah McCorquodale, appeared emotional as the verdict was delivered, at one point putting her head in her hands.
