Diana Inquest: Mohamed Al Fayed Statement - 'Dodi & I Were Blameless' PDF Print E-mail
Written by Joanne Leyland
Monday, 07 April 2008

"Contrary to Lord Stevens' report, there's now clear evidence that Diana and Dodi's relationship was serious. It's also clear that Dodi and I were blameless in planning the fatal last journey."

"I thank the jury. I had to fight long and hard for there to be a jury of ordinary men and women with hearings in public and they've done their very best in difficult circumstances."

"They didn't hear from all the witnesses. It's shocking to me that French police, senior officials, paparazzi and pathologists refused to give evidence.”

“I’ve always believed that Prince Philip and the Queen hold valuable evidence that only they know. They were not even questioned, but they should have been. Nobody should be above the law.”

“Senior British police officers sat on a crucial note by Diana’s lawyer, the Mishcon note, and then lied about their reasons for doing so.”

“The MI6 witnesses told us very little. I still believe they really know what happened.”

“Instead I’ve had to sit for six months and listen to the coroner's accusations against me and all those witnesses who said it wasn’t a simple accident.”

“I feel as though my character and beliefs that I’m entitled to have as a father have been on trial.”

“Diana and Dodi were taken away at the prime of their life, when they were at their happiest. They looked forward to their future together and I will always mourn their loss, to me and to the world.”

Exploora, William saw how much Diana suffered at the hands of the media and, in the end, they contributed to her death. For that reason (IMO) he will spend the rest of his life trying to deal with them on his terms. It will be more difficult once he marries, but for now he will do whatever it takes...and who can blame him? Yes, the media is part of the package and he will have to come to terms with it, but no one has experienced the loss that William and Harry have.

That is what can happen when a person loses a loved one, in my opinion only. A person sometimes avoids things which remind them of the huge hole which can never be filled up. Well the avoidance could become obsessive. Getting your picture taken is part of the job of being a public personality, regardless if you chose to be, their lifestyle is partly due to their position. And if a person takes a photo, of course it feels like the subject has lost control of their privacy, but a lot of people enjoy those pictures. Wills was a cute toddler. I loved that film with him looking at that huge camera and he was around the same size. His kids will be cute, and I can just imagine how the protection mode will kick in. Which of course feeds the paps wanting to chase them, since the pictures become rarer and more valuable. Wills did look a lot like Di when he was younger, possibly if he has a daughter, she will look like Di too. Maybe that is why he is afraid of marrying. Of course the fear could be intensified because of the possibly reaction of the paps, which sort of happened to him. His appeal when he was younger was linked partly to how much he looked like Di. My opinion only. Of course he could have a son which looks like the Pow, or even a daughter who looks like the Pow.

Exploora, your last sentence just gave me the chills. I don't mean that in a bad way, but it never occurred to me... Imagine...

Technically the blame does rest on the drivers' including the drivers chasing the vehicle. The jury found the drivers' behaviour negligent and unlawful, which is stronger language than the French inquiry described it to be, if I understand the details correctly.Possibly the strategy that the Al Fayeds planned out was not adequate and possibly very amateurish, but not unlawful. If I understand this right, the behaviour of one of the employees was found to be negligent and unlawful.Sadly the Al Fayeds may have not been adequately prepared for the crazy world where paps chase down subjects, in this case the chase appeared to led to their death, to get pictures which possibly could be bought by "trashy" magazines and "news" papers, which trash people in disguize of "entertainment" and "news".

I understand why Wills is so against the picture taking of Kate at his passing out parade, but I still think a lot of nice memories could be lost. And it will never bring Di back. Just all the painful memories. This could be a real problem, especially if Wills one day has a little girl, who looks alot like Di.

Okay, Easter Bunny... And isn't it interesting that he even felt the need to say that IF he truly believes in the theory he set out to prove!?!

Dodi and Daddy were innocent of wrongdoing, negligence, at the very least bad judgement or whatever....and I'm the Easter Bunny.

Al Fayed: "It's also clear that Dodi and I were blameless in planning the fatal last journey."

That statement jumped out at me. Does he suggest that Dodi was taking orders and had no say over anything. Please! He can attempt to take himself out of the planning equation, but to suggest that his son did anything other than what he wanted to do is absurd.
