Proving that it really does do what is says on the cover, the Independent decides
to avoid any mention on page one of the verdict from the High Court
inquest into the deaths of two people who, in life, would also have
received little or no attention from a newspaper which has little interest in the cult of celebrity.
It's
no surprise that The Independent has chosen not to feature the inquest
verdict on the front page.
Instead, it focused on another story which has been
building in the heart of Paris, this being the latest anti-China
protests by pro-Tibetan campaigners during the aborted procession of the
Olympic flame.
We should remember that this
is, after all, the newspaper which - in stark contrast to the reams of
coverage given over by the rest of the national press - reported the
August 1988 birth of Princess Beatrice of York with little more than a
sentence.
Seriously, you've got to admire the paper's independence in a world in
which it is intrigue and scandal which sells rather than serious
journalism and in-depth analysis of news which truly does shape lives
and opinions.
Having
said all that.....there
is room for reference on the front page to another couple who are today
living their lives via the pages of the tabloid press and the glossy
magazines which devote their pages to the world of celebrity.
The Independent front page does find room to highlight an inside story on the forthcoming wedding of
Manchester United footballer Wayne Rooney and his girlfriend, Coleen
McLaughlin.
