Scotland Yard Announces Burrell Perjury Probe PDF Print E-mail
Written by Joanne Leyland

Scotland Yard has announced that it will investigate the possible perjury of former royal butler Paul Burrell following his own admission that he didn’t tell "the whole truth" at the inquest into the deaths of Diana, Princess of Wales and Dodi Fayed.

Today’s news comes just twenty-four hours after the coroner at the inquest, Lord Justice Scott Baker, said he was "not minded" to refer the case to police.

Referring to Burrell’s two-and-a-half day appearance at the inquest, the coroner told the jury last week that "it was blindingly obvious that the evidence that he gave in this court was not the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth".

Announcing that it will now investigate the possible perjury of Burrell, as revealed in an undercover video which emerged in The Sun, a police spokesman said today: "In view of the complaint received, the Metropolitan Police Service has a duty to look at whether Paul Burrell should be considered for perjury."

"In considering this matter, we will of course take note of the coroner's decision not to refer this matter to us."

Scotland Yard wasn’t able to reveal who lodged the official complaint to police.

As reported here last night, the story of the new investigation features on the front page of today’s Sun newspaper.

But I understand that Burrell will not be re-called (he wouldn't come anyway ) or prosecuted ,
in the words of both Coroner and Scotland Yard 'at this time ' . They have not ruled out action in the future , but intend to drop it for the present . Burrell will no doubt spend years waiting for the other shoe to drop .

I also suspect that Burrell did Diana's reputation the most damage of anyone over the past 10 years - all the while protesting that he was her only true supporter ! blue-smiley

I think that is a good idea, a book called the "way it wasn't" wouldn't have much to read, or much to review.

Hi exploora,

Re. any book review: Now I know the clocks recently went forward but I don’t think they put 25 hours in the day and 8 days in the week did they? bigsmile-smiley

I think I need some extra support and extra help if you want to add to my workload! laughing-smiley

And to add to Monika's comment it could also mean a brand new topic for a brand new book written by Mr. Burrell, which Joanne might have to review.

I agree with Jean Sue to a degree, but this will only lead to more speculation and unnecessary headlines. blue-smiley

I truly believed Burrel up until recently now I realize this Dianas rock lied to feed his ego I wonder really how deep the deceit goes, although I feel he should be brought to task for this I am not sure I want to see his face and the publicity day after day it would bring, I think now his was the worse deceit against Diana.

Hurray for Scotland Yard! Why should he be allowed to get away with lying under oath; the rest of us are held responsibile for what we say.
