The First Editions: New Heartbreak For Harry's Hero PDF Print E-mail

The Royal Marine dubbed the "real hero" by Prince Harry following his return home from Afghanistan is reported to have contracted the hospital 'superbug' MRSA.

According to The Sun - which has admirably documented the story of Ben McBean ever since his bravery was highlighted by Harry - the soldier who lost an arm and a leg in a Taliban mine blast has now contracted the disease which is frequently blamed on a lack of sufficient cleanliness in hospital wards.

It was after hearing of the way in which he’d been dubbed "a hero" by sections of the media that the plain-speaking prince publicly rejected the tag.

Revealing that he felt "humbled" by the bravery of the seriously injured soldiers who travelled home on the same flight as himself and other military colleagues on March 1st, Prince Harry told a TV interviewer: "These two injured soldiers are the heroes."

"These were guys who had been blown up by a mine that they had no idea about - serving their country, doing a normal patrol."

While Harry was no doubt thankful that he could return to Highgrove house and his normal life following a ten-week tour of duty in Helmand province, Ben McBean became just the latest soldier to be transported to Birmingham's Selly Oak Hospital for extensive treatment of his injuries. He was later transferred to another unit.

Selly Oak says the Marine did not contract the MRSA bug on its premises.

This past year alone Selly Oak hospital has received several visits from the Prince of Wales.

Knowing the undoubtedly kind-hearted nature of Prince Harry, we perhaps shouldn't be surprised if one day he too doesn't also make a visit to the troops at Selly Oak.

It's a disgrace that these soldiers with missing limbs and other horrific injuries are put into not so clean wards along with geriatrics , where they catch the rampant viruses . They should have their own veterans' hospitals where things are completely sterile , and every aid for rehabilitation is available . Or don't send them to war in the first place .
