Most birthday boys receive the standard fare of cards and presents, often including yet another pair of socks from Granny!

For Prince William, however, his 26th birthday in June will seem him quite literally receive a new feather in his cap.

Buckingham Palace has just announced that the Prince and Princess of Wales' eldest son has been appointed a Royal Knight Companion of the Most Noble Order of The Garter.

The announcement that Prince William Arthur Philip Louis of Wales is to be installed as the 1,000th Garter Knight has been timed to coincide with St. George’s Day, the embargo on the news having just been lifted at 12.01am (UK time).

The Most Noble Order of The Garter was founded by King Edward III on this day – April 23rd – in 1348 as a way of uniting the monarch with the nation’s outstanding military leaders.

The full statement from Buckingham Palace reads: "The Queen has been graciously pleased to appoint His Royal Highness Prince William of Wales to be a Royal Knight Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter."

"Prince William becomes the 1000th Knight in the Register."

"The Queen has also been graciously pleased to appoint the Right Honourable the Lord Luce, GCVO, DL and Sir Thomas Dunne, KCVO, to be Knights Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter."

Lord Luce was Lord Chamberlain - one of the most senior posts in the monarch's household - between 2000 and 2006.

Sir Thomas Dunne is being recognised for his now 31-years of service as Lord-Lieutenant of Hereford. He is also Chairman of the Lord Lieutenants Association.
