Royal 'Blackmail' Plot Sting "Was An Abject Failure" PDF Print E-mail
Written by Joanne Leyland

Quizzed as to why he didn’t ask more questions of the defendants during the sting operation, the police officer denied having been nervous in his role.

Referring to his demeanour during the hotel meeting with the alleged blackmailers, 'Paul Butler' told Ronald Thwaites QC, representing Ian Strachan: "Counsel is right, I erred on the side of caution, the reasons being that I did not want any of this to become construed as an interview."

The QC then suggested to the undercover officer: "This, as an exercise in proving blackmail, was an abject failure, because no proper serious relevant questions were asked."

Replied ‘Paul Butler’, whom the court was told has worked as an undercover police officer for more than a decade: "I would totally disagree with that."

The two defendants deny making an unwarranted demand with menaces.

The case continues.

Monika, I thought exactly that - and even triple-checked the pseudonym - but (believe it or not) I didn't like to say anything in the above.

I don't know....it's certainly been a month of 'you couldn't make it up' on the royal scene.
