'The Duke' Offers A Rare Insight Into His Life PDF Print E-mail

Supporting the depiction of the duke as something of an environmental maverick is the sight of Prince Philip driving around in an LPG-powered former taxi cab which he purchased some years ago to replace the Bedford Smith electric van which he used during the 1980s - long before the rest of the wider world became as environmentally-aware as it is today.



Explaining his passion for the environment and his desire to see mankind protect the earth for future generations, Prince Philip tells Sir Trevor McDonald of the way in which he’s regularly brought together religious leaders and conservationists in an attempt to find common ground.

Says the prince: "It seemed to me that most religions attributed the world to some special creation and I said, 'Well, look if you believe God created the world you ought to take an interest in its well-being."


Part one of The Duke: A Portrait of Prince Philip will be broadcast in the UK on ITV1 at 9pm tonight (Monday 12th May 2008)

Part two will be shown on ITV1 at 9pm tomorrow night (13th May).

The reason I like the Duke of Edinburgh is that he is serious about his duties, role and function. He is a serious man, hobbled by his position and unable to speak up with much candor.

Really Prince Phillip has had a very interesting life, for someone who was brought up in the way he was he seems to have overcome many obstacles in his life and has an amazingly realistic outlook on life. I am glad for this documentary as he is although surprising spry for his age approaching the end of his life and it would be nice if he could tell his story in his own words and leave a legacy that is not just speculation but in his own words. Wish Royals could write autobiography its amazing they can keep so private and secret all their lives.
