There looks to be a quite remarkable story in Friday's Daily Express. It is one which may (or may not) cause huge headlines in the wider media in the coming days. It's being alleged that one of British Prime Minister Tony Blair's closest political allies, the former Home Secretary David Blunkett, is reported to have said there was no 'need' to have Diana, Princess of Wales 'murdered' because she had already destroyed her reputation with her behaviour. I use the word 'remarkable' as Blunkett himself fell from grace in dramatic fashion, the blind Minister forced to resign from the Cabinet not once but twice, the last time primarily because of somewhat scandalous developments in his own private life. Writing in a column in The Sun, the former Home Secretary condemned people who continue to believe the conspiracy theories surrounding the death of the Princess, before going on to say: "Let's be honest after all these years...Diana didn't 'need' murdering. She had already done her reputation fatal damage." An aide to Blunkett has reportedly confirmed he was referring to media coverage of the Princess in the weeks and months before she died. David Blunkett also went on to attack the head of the crash investigation, Lord John Stevens, a man who Blunkett had many run-ins with during his tenure at the Home Office. The former Metropolitan Police Chief was hugely critical of the ex-Minister in his recently published memoirs. In what can only be seen as retaliation for these criticisms, David Blunkett writes: "Lord Stevens is just loving the publicity from his inquiry into Di's death and this only feeds the delusions of the conspiracy theorists...They haven't uncovered the slightest crumb of evidence of a plot to assassinate the woman once destined to be Queen." In truth, David Blunkett long ago damaged his own reputation thanks to his tangled love affairs and behaviour and in recent times has become a source of much ridicule, especially from the sardonic sections of the media. Indeed, these comments about Diana have already condemned the former Minister to yet more mockery. One website (thanks to The Royalist reader Jennifer for sending this link) already clearly thinks Blunkett has connections to Clarence House!
